Artist Interview - Rain Demetri (Pt.1)

Welcome to the Flick Solitaire family! What’s it been like working with the team? 👻

- Thank you! It’s been fun and challenging in a good way. I have never been a part of this kind of collaborative project before. I really appreciated Ian’s suggestions and feedback throughout the process. It was an awesome learning experience that I’m truly grateful for and I’m really happy to be in the Flick Solitaire family!

Why monsters?... Have you ever watched The Thing - Horror/sci-fi from the 80s! 👹

- I had a pretty tumultuous childhood and would have horrible nightmares frequently, so “monsters” were pretty prevalent. I loved to escape into video games, books, nature and, overtime, monsters and other more light-hearted creatures started to develop. I love The Thing! One of my favourites and a classic.

Thank you so much for bringing our Black History month party to a close - what does this month mean to you, personally? ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽

- Black History Month means a time to celebrate and give thanks to Black people that have struggled for the freedoms and opportunities that we have today, especially the ones that are still alive fighting for equity. Not only is it a reminder for how far we've come, but it also brings awareness to the work that still needs to be done. I'm biracial and light skinned, (Black and Boricua) so, while I fully identify with both, I recognise my privilege is a responsibility that must be implemented positively.

Your Halloween deck oozes an 80s graffiti art style.. (to me).. Bright colours mixed with beautiful bold characters. What really inspired your deck design? 🧛🏾

- I was really inspired by the American Cartoonist, Al Columbia and the Cuphead video game. I tried to make a good balance of playful, yet creepy characters.

I need to know your recommendation for the best curly hair product? Please! A curly haired woman too myself 💯

- Of course! I’ve had a difficult time finding and trying hair products, but I’m really happy with Marc Anthony’s Hydrating Curl Cream. (I also leave a little bit of OGX Coconut Miracle Oil Conditioner in my hair every day.)

- What is your first memory of drawing and art? 🏡

I remember sitting down at my grandmother’s table drawing the flowers and small bugs I would see in her garden. I’ve always been inspired by nature.

Love your Chinese style dragon on Insta - fierce!... Is there anything you cannot draw or don’t enjoy drawing? 🐲

- Thanks so much! I don’t enjoy drawing hardcore smut/erotica. Every once in a while is fun though!

What was it like making a deck? 🎃

- It was a lot of hard work, but so rewarding! I loved designing the different Halloween characters, it brought out a lot of nostalgia for me.

As a huge fan of the macabre and your dark art designs - what’s your ‘darkest’ piece of art?

- That’s a really great question. I feel like most of my art has subtle or overtly dark tones, but it’s between a painting I made called Rabbit Stew, (showing a fox eating a rabbit) or my Mad Monster sketch (it’s a blue monster pulling its mouth while squeezing it’s eyes out.).

Favourite horror film? 👽

- Mars Attacks. It’s such a freaky movie and when I was growing up, my babysitter left it on. It left a permanent mark on me, haha. It seriously terrified me and I couldn’t sleep for days without having nightmares, but I can watch it and laugh now.

You receive a last minute invite to a Halloween party - what is your go-to outfit? 🧟

- YES, I love this question! Probably No-Face from the Studio Ghibli Movie, Spirited Away. I have plenty of black clothing and making a mask won’t take long at all!
