Meet the Artist: Queer Chameleon Pt. 1

Q1: Do you enjoy card games? If so, what’s your favourite?

I’m a big fan of most card games! I love Uno, Solitaire and Hearts. But also love a lot of the new card games that have come out over the last few years. Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza makes a regular appearance at home!

Q2: QC is donning some pretty regal outfits in your deck. How did you come up with the designs for the suits and the story behind the deck?

I wanted to bring in elements of the suits into each, but also the odd little queer easter egg too. If you look closely at one of the King of Hearts, you’ll notice the Trans flag colours in the scepter! Or the Labrys (The Double-sided Axe) in the hand of the King of Diamonds!

Q3: Do you have a favourite suit or card from your deck?

I think the Diamonds - I’m biased as it includes the flag of my identity!

Q4: As a British-Australian Chameleon Mom, Author, Illustrator, and social media boss, are you more led by the UK or the Aussie way of life? UK - driven but frantic. Aus - work to live!

I’m definitely very much split between the two… it just depends on which side of the bed I wake up on!

Q5: Flats or heels?

Flats all day, every day.

Q6: How did a (pretty cute) chameleon become the star of your illustrative work?

It started with a different webcomic called Anxious Animals. As part of that series I drew a chameleon who came out by turning the colours of the pride flag, and it went viral. I realised there could be a bigger idea in it, and so a spin off was born!

Q7: QC is kicking off our Pride Month Party. How do you like to celebrate?

I love going to all the amazing performances that run during the month. From drag (kings and queens), to stand up or spoken word poetry. It’s an amazing celebration of the amazing talent that makes up our community!

Q8: Which illustrators did you love growing up?

Quentin Blake, Nick Sharrat and Jim Davis definitely shaped by childhood!

Q9: Who is your favourite artist in Flick and why?

Ahhh too many to choose!! I think I love Aurélia Durand’s stunning bright colours, and Kenny’s Gifs because I’ve just been a fan of them for such a long time!

Pt. 2 coming soon!
