Aurélia Durand - Pt. 2
We heard it on the grapevine that the Queen of US chat shows - Oprah Winfrey - is a fan of your books, have you met her? Who is the celebrity you would most love to meet?
- She recommended our book, yes. It helped us to spread the word and it contributed to the success we’ve got for sure. I am not particularly interested in meeting celebrities, I have worked for famous musicians and it's not as exciting as it seems.
As a digital platform, we feel the power and responsibility our game has. We proudly use Flick to create card games for everyone, cards that represent and games that you can enjoy at your pace. How do you cope with the responsibility that your work opens to you and how much of that consciousness affects your finished piece?
- My work comes from me but it's not me. It’s easier to say it like this so I don’t get too attached to it and don't get too emotional. Everyone can interpret it as they want the moment I put it in the world. It’s not up to me anymore.
From painting big spaces to animations, we hope designing a deck of digital playing cards was enjoyable - how did you find the project?
- I never worked on a card game before, that's why I wanted to create a series of cards for your game.
What’s your favourite suit from your deck - A Colorful Game?
- I like all of them, I think more as a whole than as an individual piece, every choice (colour, characters, patterns) were made together to match the vibe of the game.
Please tell us more about the imagery behind the deck. Did you have particular characters and designs in mind for particular suits?
- I just wanted to depict Black characters with simple lines and colours to be eye catchy.
Do you play card games? What’s your go-to card game?
I play card games at home with friends, at the moment I like playing (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/182453/game-game-fire)
Your house keys are in your bag but what other two items would we find in there that you simply cannot leave the house without?
- I don’t go out without my lipstick and purifying gel haha.
We know you love your music and fans will often see you dancing around on your Instagram channel. What other activities help you to relax and feel good?
- I like to walk in the cities to discover new places. Parks are my way to go!
For artists just starting on their creative journey - what should they have in their art kit first?!
- A pen and a sketchbook.
AI-generated artwork has taken off in 2022 and to some quite controversial opinions amongst the art world - what’s your take on it?
- I don’t like it. It’s killing human creativity!
What would you say are the real-world pressures of the art industry and what would be your tips to overcome them?
- The art industry is under pressure because of the crisis we encounter. There are fewer jobs. Tech companies have cut ties. It’s a complicated year.
Your art has got braver and bolder with colours - your art oozes energy and happiness. As you sketch ideas out for a project how do you decide which colours work best for a character?
- Everything comes to me naturally, it’s my instinct which decides what to choose.
